East One Coffee Roasters Closes, But a Fight to Reopen Begins
After years of serving as a community hub, East One suddenly closed. Now, former staff and loyal customers are rallying to bring the café back to life, despite resistance from the building's landlord.
For years, East One Coffee Roasters was a neighborhood staple, dishing out fry-ups for breakfast; burgers and grain bowls for lunch; and coffee in its all-day cafe. On sunny days, its outdoor tables were filled with leisurely locals admiring the view of Carroll Park. On rainy afternoons, the warm, woody interior promised a cozy escape and a fresh brew. The roastery itself was even on display, adding an extra touch of charm.
All seemed to be going well until February 28, when East One announced via Instagram that it would permanently close both its restaurant and cafe. “The kindness of our community has carried us through immense challenge and immense joy,” the post read. “Nevertheless, here we are, letting you, our wonderful community know that we will be ceasing operations next week.”
The news came as a shock. Just two days earlier, a friend and I were chatting inside the cafe, oblivious to any hint of closure. However, CSJ has learned that the business had been facing challenges for quite some time.
