This Week’s Slow Read
Slow Read is an editorial concept by Court Street Journal. It’s an invitation to slow down and enjoy a read, from beginning to end.
This week’s Slow Read is about Woven Performance and Longevity, a beautiful new gym on Atlantic Avenue that wants to help women get strong without the anxiety of training in a male-dominated space.
“So much of the messaging in fitness isn’t supportive or helpful or anything that’s not just like ‘Be as small as you can at any cost,’” said Lisa Daronatsy Kiyindou, Woven’s CEO, Co-Founder and Co-Owner. “I wanted to create something different and do it really well.”
Words and illustrations, featuring Woven’s chic interior design and cozy cafe, here.
The Roundup
This afternoon, coffee shop Saturn Road is hosting a dog meet and greet. Given how many furry friends I’ve seen in this neighborhood, I know someone reading this will want to head over to 276 Court Street between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to pet some pups!
A film about the Gowanus rezoning process and the locals who supported and opposed it debuts this Wednesday, April 2. Gowanus Current, which has been 10 years in the making, will show at Cobble Hill Cinemas. Read more in Park Slope Pulse.
Loafers Cocktail Bar’s decor is a study in local queer history. The bar has added descriptions to its framed photos, which feature various queer people and places from Brooklyn. It’s chic, it’s local, it’s queer – we love.
Local magician Greg Dubin is popping up on Court Street, right next to Luana’s Tavern. Dubin is a friend of Luana’s owners and the unexpected star of our Luana’s story. I’d been wondering what Precision Clock & Watch is. Perhaps it involves… precision? Clocks. Watches?? If you want the hocus-pocus, put a ticket in focus.
Life Time is taking over 80,000 square feet of the Brooklyn Tower. The gym – actually, I prefer this description of it as an “athletic country club” – will be Life Time’s largest in Brooklyn, opening in the latter half of 2026.
